Green Fingers
Mouse over for larger imageGreenfingers is a gardening Club started in 2001 and run by Mrs S Bailey which offers children of all ages the opportunity to become involved in school grounds projects. It is a really enjoyable club which takes the children through autumn, winter, spring and summer projects.
Greenfingers offers children the opportunity to learn safe gardening skills and gain practical knowledge about their environment.
Our initial brief was to help build a vegetable plot and we discovered early on that at St. Mary's gardeners are very keen! They demonstrated that they are extremely capable, practical and most definitely not 'fair-weather gardeners' and since then our areas have extended to work in the car park and around school. One particular aspect everyone has shown is a real interest in, is sowing and growing their own fruit and vegetables.
Last year seed potatoes were planted resulting a great crop of spuds in October harvested by this year's new gardeners. Currently a large variety of fruits and vegetables are under cultivation and we await some bumper crops.
We welcome any extra pairs of adult hands in order to be able to offer more children the opportunity to get involved in Greenfingers - you do not have to be a gardener, just being prepared to 'muck in' is ideal. Grand parents are most welcome as well.
